Immigrant art project by Cypriot students wins Saatchi gallery prize
A Cypriot art project highlighting the plight of immigrants crossing the Mediterranean has claimed first prize in an international competition.
The piece “Immigrants” is constructed around a boat owned by the Colossi council that was marked for disposal.
However, after being salvaged by a group of art students from the suburb of Limassol, it was transformed into a monument to those who died, and those who survived, crossing into Europe.
The work was recognised with the 2016 Saatchi Gallery/ Deutsche Bank Art Prize in London.
