Greek photographer candidate for top world award


Angelos Tzortzinis is among the candidates for the top prize of the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards for his work on the refugee crisis.

Tzortzinis has been nominated for the category “Current Affairs” with a series of photos titled: In Search of the European Dream.

Tzortzinis was born in Athens in 1984. He finished his studies at the Leica Academy of Creative Photography in Athens.

During the past 5 years he has been working on the immigration issue in Greece.

In his words:

I have been traveling across the Greek land and sea borders but also documenting the immigrants lives in Athens and their efforts to leave a country undergoing a severe economic crisis.

His work has been published in TIME Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times.

His has held exhibitions at the Visa Pour l’Image 2012 and 2013 in Perpignan, France and the Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism in Hannover, Germany.

Currently he works freelance for The New York Times and AFP based in Athens.
