Greece appoints new director of Athens Festival after Fabre’s resignation

The Ministry of Culture has appointed Vangelis Theodoropoulos as the new art director of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, following the resignation of Jan Fabre.

Jan Fabre, barely appointed artistic director of the Festival, resigned over the weekend after a huge controversy over his plans to turn the Athens Festival into a Belgian event.

The Ministry of Culture says that Theodoropoulos will work closely with Greek artists for this year’s festival, despite the difficult circumstances.

The newly appointed art director graduated from the Drama School of the Athens Conservatory and has worked as an actor since 1992. In 1997 Theodoropoulos focused on directing and established the Neos Kosmos theater in Athens.

Throughout his career Theodoropoulos has actively supported younger generations of actors and artists, having helped many establish themselves.

The new art director is also experienced in teaching, primarily at the National Theater’s Drama School.
